Hong Kong SAR China: about the flag
Hong Kong's flag is a flower that exists almost nowhere else: the bauhinia blakeana, a sterile hybrid discovered in Hong Kong in the nineteenth century and named for a colonial governor, blooms in white on the flag's red field.
Five petals open around five stars, one in each petal, echoing the stars on China's flag. The winning design came from the architect Tao Ho in the 1990 competition for the handover flag; red is China's color, and the dynamic petals were meant to suggest the city's energy and its new place in the nation.
The flag was adopted on 16 February 1990 and first raised at the handover ceremony on 1 July 1997, as the Union Jack came down after 156 years. It now flies over the government headquarters and the courts: the flower of the island on the red of the mainland.
