Honduras: about the flag

The five stars on Honduras' flag remember a country that might have been. They stand for the five states of the old Federal Republic of Central America, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, the 1823 union that broke apart in 1838 but never quite left the imagination.

The flag itself descends from that federation's blue-white-blue. Honduras added the stars in 1866 to mark its membership in the family, and they have stayed put through every constitution since. Blue recalls the sky and the two oceans, white peace.

Hondurans fly the flag on 15 September, independence day, when all five former republics celebrate the same anniversary on the same day. It hangs from houses, buses and boats across the country, one of the most quietly romantic flags in the Americas.
