Haiti: about the flag

Haiti's flag was made by subtraction. In May 1803, the revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines tore the white stripe from the French tricolor, declaring that the white had been ripped from the flag of a free people. Blue and red were left to stand for the Black and mixed-race citizens who had fought slavery's army.

Two years later the same banner rose over the world's first independent black republic, born of the only slave uprising to found a state. The civil flag is plain blue and red; the state flag adds the arms, a palm of independence topped by a liberty cap, with the drums and cannons of the revolution, and the motto L'Union fait la force, unity makes strength.

The design was settled by 1806, and Haitians keep the flag's making on 18 May, flag day, a national holiday dedicated to the act of tearing a flag apart to make a new one.
