Guyana: about the flag

Guyana's flag has a name, the Golden Arrowhead, and a founder of a science behind it. It was designed by Whitney Smith, the American scholar who coined the word vexillology and helped found the field, and it won the competition for the new nation's flag in 1966.

Smith packed the country's geography into the design: green for the forests and agriculture, gold for the mineral wealth, red for the zeal and sacrifice of the people, black for the endurance of the nation, white for its rivers and water. The whole composition points forward like an arrowhead driving toward the future.

The flag was adopted on 26 May 1966, independence day, and Guyana still celebrates 26 May as its birthday. Smith was in his mid-twenties when he sketched it, a young scholar giving a country he had never seen one of South America's boldest flags.
