Guinea: about the flag

Guinea's flag is a pan-African original. Adopted on 10 November 1958, after the territory stunned Paris by voting no to Charles de Gaulle's proposed French Community, it became one of the very first red-yellow-green African flags, raised even before formal independence on 2 October 1958.

Red stands for the blood of the anti-colonial struggle, yellow for the sun and the wealth of the earth, green for the vegetation. The same colors had just flown over Ghana, and Mali would follow: Guinea was part of a wave that recolored Africa's map.

The no vote cost Guinea dearly, and as the story goes France withdrew overnight, even unscrewing the light bulbs, but the flag survived. Guinea-Conakry flies it every 2 October, independence day.
