Guernsey: about the flag

Guernsey's flag is England's flag with a secret added. The red cross of St George flies as it has for centuries, but in 1985 Guernsey slipped a gold cross inside it, the cross said to have been carried by William the Conqueror at Hastings in 1066, when Guernsey was part of his Duchy of Normandy.

The addition was practical as much as historical: at sea, Guernsey and English boats flew identical banners, and the gold cross made the island's flag unmistakable. Islanders still speak of owing loyalty to the Duke of Normandy, today the British monarch, rather than to England itself.

The flag was adopted on 30 April 1985, and the island marks that date each spring. It flies over St Peter Port's harbor, the castle, and the flower-filled lanes of the bailiwick.
