Guatemala: about the flag

Guatemala's flag flies the colors of a union that broke apart. Blue-white-blue comes from the United Provinces of Central America, the 1823 federation of which Guatemala was the heart; the blues stand for the Pacific and the Caribbean that wash the isthmus, the white for peace.

The state flag adds the arms: a quetzal, the emerald bird of the cloud forests, perched on a scroll bearing the date 15 September 1821, independence day. Legend says the quetzal dies in captivity, which made it the eternal emblem of liberty; crossed rifles and sabers beneath recall the readiness to defend it.

The flag in its modern form was fixed by decree in 1968. On 15 September, independence day, Guatemalans parade under it from Antigua to the capital, and the bird on the flag is the same one on the currency, also called the quetzal.
