Guam: about the flag
Guam's flag keeps its old Spanish-era name alive: the word GUAM runs in red across the seal, though the Chamorro people call their home Guahan. The deep-blue field carries the seal itself, a coconut palm leaning over a beach while a flying proa, the swift outrigger canoe of the Marianas, skims the water.
The scene compresses the island's story: the palm for sustenance, the proa for the seafaring skill that carried the Chamorro across the Pacific long before Europeans arrived. The flag was adopted in 1948, while Guam was still recovering from occupation in the Second World War.
Guam flies it with particular feeling on 21 July, Liberation Day, which marks the 1944 landing that freed the island. The proa and the palm still appear on everything from license plates to the island's airline.
