Grenada: about the flag

The nutmeg on Grenada's flag gives away the island's old nickname: the Spice Isle. Grenada once grew much of the world's nutmeg, and the pod sits in the hoist-side triangle, on green for the vegetation that covers the island.

The flag was designed by Anthony C. George and adopted on 7 February 1974, independence day from Britain. Six gold stars run around the red border for the six parishes, and a seventh star in the center stands for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, the smaller islands that belong to the state. Yellow triangles at top and bottom recall the sun, and the red borders speak of the people's zeal.

The flag took its form just months before independence and has never changed. Grenadians fly it on 7 February, and the nutmeg trade still perfumes the harbor at St George's.
