Greenland: about the flag

Greenland's flag is a polar sun caught half-rising: a red-and-white disc, split by the horizon line, on a field of red above and white below. Designed by the Greenlandic artist Thue Christiansen, it was adopted on 21 June 1985.

Red and white tip the hat to Denmark, to which Greenland still belongs as an autonomous territory. But the disc is pure Arctic: the sun returning after the long polar night, meeting the white of the ice cap. Its counterchange, red below the line and white above, with the disc split to match, is an elegant trick with just two colors.

The adoption date was no accident: 21 June is Greenland's national day, the longest day, so the flag and the midnight sun celebrate together. The banner flies over Nuuk's colorful harbor and from every settlement along the ice-free west coast.
