Greece: about the flag

Greece's flag wraps a prayer in nine stripes. The most-loved explanation counts the stripes as the nine syllables of the revolution's cry, Eleftheria i Thanatos, freedom or death, though like many flag stories it is more legend than record. The white cross in the corner stands plainly for the Greek Orthodox faith that marched with the 1821 uprising.

Blue and white also echo the sea and the foam of the Aegean. The revolution's first flags varied wildly; the cross-and-stripes pattern was settled by the National Assembly at Epidaurus in 1822, and the exact shade of blue has wandered ever since, light under the Bavarian king Otto, darker in modern times.

Greeks mark the flag on 27 October, the eve of Ohi Day, when it flies from balconies before the wartime anniversary parades.
