Ghana: about the flag
Ghana's flag made history on 6 March 1957: when Kwame Nkrumah's Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African colony to win independence, its new flag, red, gold and green with a black star, showed the rest of the continent the way.
The designer was Theodosia Salome Okoh, an artist and teacher. Red stands for the blood of those who fought for freedom, gold for the country's mineral wealth, green for its forests, and the black star for African freedom, a symbol associated with Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line and his message of black pride.
Okoh's flag reversed Ethiopia's color order and added the star, and it spawned a family: look at the flags of Guinea-Bissau and Sao Tome and Principe and you will meet Ghana's children. The star gave the national football team its name, the Black Stars, and 6 March remains flag day.
