Georgia: about the flag
Georgia's five-cross flag makes a bold claim: that it is medieval. The design, a large red cross with four smaller ones in the quarters, is tied by tradition to the golden age of Queen Tamar in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, when Georgian chronicles describe a banner much like it.
Historians debate how continuous the use really was. What is certain is that the five-cross flag reappeared with Georgia's 1918 independence, was pushed aside under Soviet rule, and returned in the early 1990s. After the Rose Revolution of 2003, the new government made it official on 14 January 2004, turning away from the Soviet-era design for good.
The white field is deliberately plain. Today the flag flies over Tbilisi and from Georgian embassies, an ancient pattern worn as a modern emblem.
