Gabon: about the flag

Gabon's flag reads like the country from south to north, and then out to sea: green for the dense forests that cover most of the land, yellow for the sun and the equator that runs right through the country, blue for the Atlantic.

It was adopted on 9 August 1960, a week before independence from France, and it was one of the first African flags to use green, yellow and blue, a set of colors that set Gabon apart from the red-heavy flags of its neighbors.

Gabon marks independence on 17 August, when the flag flies over Libreville and the oil towns of the coast. The three plain bands have never changed, making this one of Africa's most stable and most recognizable designs.
