French Polynesia: about the flag

French Polynesia's flag is a seascape with a canoe at the center: red horizontal bands above and below a white one, where a golden outrigger canoe sails beneath a golden sun.

Inside the canoe sit five stylized figures, one for each of the five archipelagos that make up the territory: the Society Islands, the Tuamotus, the Marquesas, the Australs and the Gambier. The va'a, the outrigger canoe, is the vessel that carried the Polynesians across the ocean to these islands in the first place.

The flag was adopted in 1984 for the territory's autonomy government, and it flies alongside the French tricolor, which remains the state's official flag. It appears everywhere, on the airline's planes and the national rugby team's shirts, in a territory scattered across a slice of ocean the size of Europe.
