France: about the flag

France's flag began as a compromise at a revolution. In July 1789, Parisians wore red and blue, the colors of the city, as they stormed the Bastille. The marquis de Lafayette, commanding the new National Guard, added the royal white between them, and the cockade of France was born.

When the revolution needed a flag, the tricolor was the answer. The navy flew it from 1794, and the Convention adopted it on 15 February of that year. Red and blue are Paris; white is the monarchy absorbed, or as revolutionaries said, the nation wrapped around the king's color.

Kings and emperors dropped and revived it, but since the July Revolution of 1830 it has never left. It flies on 14 July and from every town hall in France, and its design has been borrowed by more countries than any other flag's.
