Faroe Islands: about the flag

The Faroe Islands call their flag Merkid, the banner, as if there were only one. It was sketched in 1919 by Jens Oliver Lisberg, a Faroese student in Copenhagen, but the islands had to wait for war to fly it officially: in 1940, with Denmark occupied by Germany, Faroese ships needed a flag the Royal Navy would not mistake for a hostile one, and Merkid was authorized on 25 April 1940.

The colors braid the islands' two histories: red and white from the Danish flag, blue and white from Norway's, for the Norse centuries before Denmark.

Faroese celebrate Flag Day on 25 April, when Merkid flies from every home, and even from the islanders' fishing boats far out in the North Atlantic, where the cross stands out against the grey sea.
