Falkland Islands: about the flag

The Falkland Islands' flag carries a ship and a pun. The coat of arms shows the Desire, the vessel whose 1592 voyage put the islands on European maps, and the motto beneath reads Desire the Right, honoring both the ship and the islanders' wish to choose their own future.

The shield's ram stands for the sheep that built the islands' economy, grazing above waves of blue and white, and the whole arms sits on the classic blue ensign.

The flag in its current form dates from 1999, when the white disc behind the arms was standardized. Islanders fly it with particular pride on 14 June, Liberation Day, marking the end of the 1982 war, when it hangs from nearly every house in Stanley.
