Ethiopia: about the flag

Ethiopia's green-yellow-red is the grandmother of African flags. Because Ethiopia, apart from the years of Italian occupation, was never colonized, its banner became the colors of independence itself, copied by Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Cameroon and more as the continent freed itself in the 1950s and 60s.

The colors reach back to the late nineteenth century, when Emperor Menelik II's armies flew green, yellow and red. Under Emperor Haile Selassie the state flag added the Lion of Judah carrying a cross and a banner, an emblem that also gave the Rastafari movement, which revered the emperor, its colors. The revolution of 1974 swept the lion away.

The plain tricolor serves as the civil flag; the state flag adds a blue disc with a golden pentagram and rays, adopted in 1996. Every African flag with green, yellow and red is flying a little bit of Ethiopia.
