Eswatini: about the flag

Eswatini's flag is built around a warrior's shield: a black-and-white Nguni shield with two spears behind it, laid on horizontal bands of blue, yellow and crimson. The shield is the emajobo, the war shield of the Swazi regiments that guard the monarchy.

Blue stands for peace and stability, yellow for the country's resources, red for the battles of the past. The black and white of the shield itself carry the gentlest meaning on the flag: the harmony of people of different colors living together.

The flag was adopted on 6 September 1968, independence day from Britain. In 2018, on the fiftieth anniversary, King Mswati III renamed the country from Swaziland to Eswatini, a new name on the same flag, which still flies over the royal kraal and the reed dance.
