Estonia: about the flag

Estonia's flag began as a student banner. In 1884 the Estonian Students' Society in Tartu consecrated a blue-black-white tricolor: blue for the sky, black for the soil and the sorrows of the past, white for snow, purity and hope.

It became the national flag when independence was declared on 24 February 1918, and it was banned under the Soviet occupation. For half a century Estonians kept it hidden, sewn inside coats and unfurled in forests, until it returned to public buildings in 1990, months before the empire collapsed.

The flag now flies on 24 February, independence day, and each June the anniversary of the 1884 consecration is marked at Otepaa church, where the first flag still rests.
