Eritrea: about the flag

Eritrea's flag keeps the colors of a thirty-year war. During the long fight for independence from Ethiopia, the liberation fronts used green, red and blue, for the land, the blood and the sea, arranged in triangles meeting at a point.

After independence in 1991 and the 1993 referendum that confirmed it, the flag was formalized on 5 December 1995: a gold emblem in the center adds a wreath of olive branches around an upright branch, peace won at last after three decades of war.

Eritreans mark 24 May, independence day, when Asmara fills with the flag's green, red and blue. The triangle pattern still recalls the fronts' battle flags, making Eritrea's one of the most war-born designs still flying in Africa.
