Equatorial Guinea: about the flag

Equatorial Guinea's flag gathers the country's landscape in three stripes: green for the jungle of the mainland, white for peace, red for the struggle for independence, and a blue triangle at the hoist for the sea that links the islands to the continent. The state flag adds the coat of arms: a silk-cotton tree, the national emblem, with six gold stars for the country's regions.

The motto beneath the arms reads Unidad, Paz, Justicia, unity, peace, justice.

The flag was adopted in 1968 at independence, and the arms were redrawn in 1979 after the fall of the country's first ruler, whose regime had altered them. Today it flies over Malabo and the offshore platforms that transformed this small African nation.
