England: about the flag
England's flag is a saint's emblem turned national banner: the red cross of St George on white. George was a Roman soldier martyred in the fourth century, and the dragon-slaying legend that made him famous gathered over centuries of retelling.
Crusaders wore the red cross on white as they marched east in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and by the fourteenth the banner belonged to England. Edward III made George patron saint of his new Order of the Garter in 1348, and English ships fought under the cross at sea.
Today the flag waves over the England football and cricket teams, flies from churches on St George's Day, 23 April, also Shakespeare's birthday, and survives, quartered, inside the Union Jack.
