Ecuador: about the flag

Ecuador's flag is a family affair: it shares the yellow-blue-red design with Colombia and Venezuela, the three heirs of Simon Bolivar's Gran Colombia. Ecuador kept the tricolor after the union broke apart and made it official on 26 September 1860 under Gabriel Garcia Moreno.

The state flag adds the coat of arms to the yellow band: a shield showing Mount Chimborazo and the river Guayas, with a steamboat on the water. The vessel is the Guayas, built in Guayaquil in 1841 and said to be the first steamship constructed in South America. Above the shield, an Andean condor spreads its wings.

The yellow band takes half the flag, for the country's wealth, blue for the sea and sky, red for the blood of those who fought. Every August, independence celebrations fill Quito's squares with it.
