Dominican Republic: about the flag

The Dominican flag was born in a secret society. In 1838, young patriots led by Juan Pablo Duarte founded La Trinitaria to plot independence from Haiti, and they designed the flag: a white cross, with blue and red quarters recalling the French tricolor that had flown over Hispaniola's first republic.

On 27 February 1844, independence was proclaimed at the Puerta del Conde in Santo Domingo, and the new flag rose. The state version carries the coat of arms: a Bible open to the Gospel of John, one of the only Bibles on any national flag, with the words La verdad os hara libres, the truth shall set you free, and the motto Dios, Patria, Libertad, God, country, freedom.

Flag Day falls on 27 February, the independence anniversary, and Dominicans celebrate it with parades from Santo Domingo to New York.
