Dominica: about the flag

Dominica's flag is one of the only national flags in the world to use purple, in the feathers of the Sisserou parrot at its center. The bird, an imperial amazon found only in Dominica's mountains, is the national bird, rare in the wild and guarded accordingly.

Around the parrot, a cross of three bands, yellow, black and white, stands for the Trinity and the island's life: yellow for sunshine and the crops, black for the soil and African heritage, white for the rivers and purity. Ten green stars around the parrot count the ten parishes, on a green field for the vegetation that earned the island its name, the nature isle.

The flag was designed by Alwin Bully and adopted on 3 November 1978, independence day. Hurricanes have tested the island since, but the parrot endures, and so does the flag.
