Denmark: about the flag

The Dannebrog holds a record no other flag can touch: it is widely counted the oldest national flag still in continuous use, and Danes can date its legendary birthday to the day. On 15 June 1219, the story goes, the flag fell from the sky during the Battle of Lyndanisse in Estonia, where King Valdemar II's army was losing, until the white cross on red turned the battle.

Historians first document the banner a century and a half later, in the armorials of the 1370s, but Danes happily celebrate the legend anyway. Lyndanisse is modern Tallinn, and the battle site still carries the memory.

Danes fly the flag with astonishing frequency, for birthdays, weddings and even Christmas trees, and it appears on wrapping paper and birthday cards, a national symbol folded into everyday courtesy. Valdemar's Day on 15 June is the flag's own anniversary.
