Czechia: about the flag

Czechia's flag was a practical fix that became a national treasure. When Czechoslovakia was born in 1918, it needed a flag that could not be mistaken for Poland's white-and-red, so a blue triangle was added at the hoist. The white and red are Bohemia's ancient colors; blue completes the pan-Slavic trio.

The flag was adopted on 30 March 1920 and flew for Czechoslovakia through the First Republic, the Nazi occupation and four decades of communism.

When Czechoslovakia split in 1993, the two halves agreed the Czech Republic would keep the old flag while Slovakia adopted a new one, the double cross on three hills. Czechs still call it simply the state flag, and it flies unchanged over Prague Castle, as it has for more than a century.
