Cyprus: about the flag
Cyprus is one of the very few countries whose flag is a map: the whole island traced in copper-orange on white, two olive branches crossed beneath it. White stands for peace, the branches for peace between the island's Greek and Turkish communities, and orange for copper, the metal that took its name from this island.
The flag was chosen at independence and first raised on 16 August 1960. Notably, it carries no cross and no crescent, a deliberate omission in a divided island, meant to be shared by everyone.
The two communities have been separated since 1974, but in the south the flag flies over government buildings, and in the divided capital, Nicosia, it hangs at the checkpoints along the Green Line: a map of a whole island on a flag over a split one.
