Cuba: about the flag
Cuba's flag was dreamed up in exile. In 1849, General Narciso Lopez, a Venezuelan-born fighter for Cuban independence, and Cuban exiles in New York designed it: five stripes, blue for the island's departments and white for the purity of the cause by tradition, and a red triangle with a lone white star.
Lopez twice landed in Cuba with the flag, in 1850 and 1851, and both expeditions failed; he was executed. But the banner caught on. The poet Perucho Figueredo composed the national anthem during the 1868 uprising, scribbling the words on horseback while looking at the flag.
Cuba made the banner official on 20 May 1902, the first independence day. The red triangle recalls the Masonic ideals many independence fighters held, Lopez among them, and the star still points to freedom over Havana's Malecon.
