Croatia: about the flag

The red-and-white checkerboard on Croatia's flag is so tied to the country that Croatians simply call it sahhovnica, the chessboard. Which color sits in the corner was long disputed, a quarrel older than most of Europe's borders.

The checkerboard is crowned by five small shields: the oldest shows a white star and crescent, the emblem found on Croatian stone carvings from the twelfth century, alongside the arms of Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia. The tricolor of red, white and blue flew in the 1848 revolutions, when Ban Jelacic's forces carried banners much like today's.

After independence, Croatia brought it back: the flag was adopted on 21 December 1990, half a year before the country left Yugoslavia. It flies on 25 June, Statehood Day, and the checkerboard appears everywhere, on football shirts and even baked into festive bread.
