Côte d’Ivoire: about the flag

Cote d'Ivoire's flag is Ireland's flag walking backward: orange, white and green instead of green, white and orange. The two countries' flags cause endless mix-ups, and the Ivorian one runs from the hoist in orange.

Adopted on 3 December 1959, months before independence from France, the colors read as a journey across the country: orange for the savanna of the north and the land, white for peace, green for the forests of the south and hope for the future.

The flag flies at its most passionate in football, when the Elephants turn stadiums orange, and it is one of the few national flags with no emblem of any kind: three plain bands of color carrying the whole country. Independence day falls on 7 August.
