Costa Rica: about the flag

Costa Rica's flag doubles the French idea. It was designed in 1848 under President Jose Maria Castro Madriz, who admired the French tricolor and stretched it: blue and white at the edges, with a band of red, doubled in width, running through the middle.

Blue stands for the sky, white for clarity and peace, and the broad red for the warmth of Costa Ricans. The state flag adds the coat of arms on the red band, with mountains, ships and the word America.

The exact pattern was pinned down by decree in 1948, the year civil war ended with the army abolished. Costa Ricans fly the flag on 15 September, independence day, when schoolchildren parade with it through every town, and it hangs outside homes on days of national pride.
