Cook Islands: about the flag
The Cook Islands chose a flag that looks both ways: a blue ensign like New Zealand's, but with fifteen gold stars in a ring instead of the Southern Cross, fifteen stars for fifteen islands from Rarotonga out to lonely Pukapuka.
The ring of stars deliberately echoes the flag of Europe, chosen when the islands took self-government in free association with New Zealand in 1979, looking across the world for friendship. Before that, from 1973, the islands had flown a green version of the same ring, in the old New Zealand green-ensign tradition.
The flag was adopted on 4 August 1979, Constitution Day, and 4 August is still its birthday each year. The ring of fifteen now stands for the whole scattered nation, on government buildings and on the rugby shirts of its famous sevens teams.
