Congo - Brazzaville: about the flag

The Republic of the Congo's flag uses the Pan-African colors of green, yellow, and red. The flag was approved on 18 August 1959, by a constituent assembly, and it became official on 15 September 1959, before the country gained independence from France.

The flag has a diagonal band of yellow, with green in the upper hoist and red in the lower fly. Green stands for peace and the country's forests, yellow for the wealth of the land and hope, and red for the blood shed in the struggle for freedom. The design was abandoned in 1970, when the country became a socialist state, and it was readopted on 10 June 1991.

The flag has remained unchanged since 1991. It is flown on government buildings and at official ceremonies across the country.
