Comoros: about the flag

The Comoros flag is a map in color. Four stripes, yellow, white, red and blue, stand for the four main islands, listed from south to north: Moheli, Mayotte, Anjouan and Grande Comore. The white one remembers Mayotte, still administered by France, which the Comoros claim as their own.

A green triangle carries a white crescent and four stars, declaring the country's Muslim faith; green and the crescent are the oldest symbols on Comorian flags.

Few flags have changed as often: since 1963 the islands have hoisted more than half a dozen designs as governments rose and fell. The current flag dates from 7 January 2002, after the new constitution settled the islands' place in one state.
