Colombia: about the flag
Colombia's flag gives yellow the best deal in vexillology: the top stripe takes half the whole flag, blue and red splitting the rest. Colombians simply call it the tricolor.
The colors came from Francisco de Miranda, the Venezuelan precursor who in 1806 raised a yellow-blue-red banner while dreaming of a free South America. He explained the colors as gold for the riches of the land, blue for the sea, red for the blood that would buy freedom, and the armies of independence carried the flag from Venezuela to Colombia.
After the breakup of Gran Colombia, Colombia kept it; the tricolor became the national flag in 1861, and the double-width yellow was standardized later. Colombia marks Flag Day on 7 August, the anniversary of the 1819 Battle of Boyaca that sealed independence.
