Cocos (Keeling) Islands: about the flag

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands, a tiny Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, has a flag that reads like a postcard of itself. Adopted in 2004, it is green and gold, Australia's national colors, with a coconut palm at the center rising from a golden disc, and the Southern Cross, familiar from the Australian flag, shining to one side.

Only a few hundred people live on the atolls, descendants of the Cocos Malays who settled there in the nineteenth century under the Clunies-Ross family, who ran the islands like a private estate for more than a century.

Today the local flag flies beside the Australian one on the jetty and at the settlement on Home Island, and the palm on the flag is the same one that gave the islands their name.
