China: about the flag
China's flag was chosen from a crowd. In 1949, as the new People's Republic was being born, the government asked the public for designs and received nearly 3,000. The winning entry came from Zeng Liansong, a young economist from the city of Wenzhou.
His design is red for revolution, with one large gold star and four small ones. The large star stands for the Communist Party; the four small ones, arranged as if circling it, stand for the four classes of the new China as Mao had defined them: workers, peasants, the urban middle class and the national bourgeoisie. Each small star points one ray toward the center.
The flag was adopted on 27 September 1949 and first raised over Tiananmen Square on 1 October, the founding day now celebrated as National Day.
