Chile: about the flag

Chileans call their flag La Estrella Solitaria, the Lone Star, and it appeared in the middle of a war. After the patriot victory at Chacabuco in February 1817, the government raised a new flag: white and red for the snow of the Andes and the blood spilled for freedom, with a canton of blue holding one white star as a guide to honor and progress.

The flag was officially adopted on 18 October 1817, and its design is credited to Jose Ignacio Zenteno, the minister of war. The single star set it apart from the banners of the other new nations.

Chile marks Flag Day on 9 July, remembering the 1882 defense of La Concepcion, where soldiers fought to the last man beneath it. Every September, Fiestas Patrias turns the country into a sea of the same flag, from the Atacama to Punta Arenas.
