Central African Republic: about the flag

Barthelemy Boganda wanted a flag that made a whole region make sense. A Catholic priest turned nationalist, he designed the banner of his movement as a map in cloth: four horizontal stripes for the four territories of French Equatorial Africa, crossed by one red stripe for the blood shared by all people, whatever their origin.

A gold star in the corner stood for freedom and the unity of the continent. Boganda never lived to see the flag over a nation: he died in a plane crash in 1959, months before the territory became the Central African Republic.

The flag was adopted on 1 December 1958, and it outlived both the empire it described and the man who drew it. In Bangui, a statue of Boganda shows him with the flag in hand, the founding father remembered holding his design.
