Canada: about the flag

Canada's flag is a rare national symbol that was settled by a long, loud argument. In 1964 Parliament spent months debating a new flag, in what became known as the Great Flag Debate, before choosing a red maple leaf on a white square between two red bars.

The design is based on a proposal by the historian George Stanley, who drew on the flag of the Royal Military College of Canada. The eleven-pointed leaf has no special meaning: its shape was chosen after wind-tunnel tests showed that it stays clear and sharp in the wind. Red and white have been Canada's official colors since 1921, under King George V, and the maple leaf had been a Canadian emblem for well over a century before that.

The flag was first raised on Parliament Hill on 15 February 1965, replacing the Canadian Red Ensign. Canadians mark National Flag of Canada Day on that date every year.
