Cameroon: about the flag

Cameroon's flag once had two stars, and losing one made the country's history visible. The 1961 flag carried two gold stars for the two states that had joined to form the federation: the former French Cameroon and the Southern Cameroons under British rule.

When the federation was scrapped and the country made a single unitary state in 1972, the second star came off the flag as well. What remains: green for the forests of the south, red for unity, yellow for the savanna and the sun, and one star for one Cameroon.

The current flag was set on 20 May 1975, 20 May being the date of the 1972 referendum. It is one of Africa's few vertical-striped tricolors, and it flies wherever the Indomitable Lions play.
