Brunei: about the flag
Brunei's flag is a flag of royalty: in Southeast Asia, yellow banners long proclaimed a sultan, and Brunei's is a rich yellow field, one of the oldest sultanates still flying. Black and white diagonal stripes cut across the hoist, and on them sits the national crest.
The crest gathers the pillars of the state: a crescent for Islam, an umbrella for the monarchy, and upraised hands on either side for the just governance promised to the people. Across the crescent runs the national motto in Arabic, Ad-daimun al-muhsinun bil-huda, always in service with God's guidance.
The flag was adopted on 29 September 1959, the same day as the national anthem and crest, as Brunei moved toward full self-rule. It flies over the great mosque and the water villages of Bandar Seri Begawan.
