British Indian Ocean Territory: about the flag
The flag of the British Indian Ocean Territory looks like a chart: a blue ensign with wavy white lines for the sea, a palm tree and a crown. It flies only over the scattered islands of the Chagos Archipelago.
The territory was created in 1965, when Britain detached the Chagos islands from Mauritius before that island's independence. Within a decade the islanders had been removed to make way for a military base on Diego Garcia, a wound that still marks the territory's history.
The palm and the crown sit between the waves. The flag was introduced in 1990, and it is seen mostly at the base and on official occasions, for the islands have no civilian population of their own.
