Brazil: about the flag

Brazil's flag carries a real piece of the sky. The blue disc at the center shows the stars as they appeared over Rio de Janeiro on the morning of 15 November 1889, the day the republic was proclaimed.

The flag was adopted four days later, on 19 November 1889. The green and yellow come from the flag of the empire, where they stood for the royal houses of Braganza and Habsburg; many Brazilians today read them as forests and gold. The white band across the disc carries the motto "Ordem e Progresso", Portuguese for "Order and Progress", an idea taken from the philosopher Auguste Comte.

Each star stands for a state or for the Federal District, so the number has grown as new states were created. Today there are 27. Brazil celebrates Flag Day on 19 November.
