Bosnia & Herzegovina: about the flag

Bosnia and Herzegovina's flag is one of the few national flags ever handed down by a foreign official. When the country's institutions could not agree on a design after the war, the international High Representative, the Dutch diplomat Carlos Westendorp, chose this one from finalists in a public competition.

The yellow triangle echoes the shape of the country on the map, and the diagonal line of white stars, cut off at the edges, stands for Europe, running on past the flag's borders as if to say the country belongs to it. The blue field is the usual European blue.

The flag was adopted on 4 February 1998. Its imposed birth still colors how people feel about it, but it flies over the parliament and the bridges of Mostar as the working banner of a single state.
