Bolivia: about the flag

Bolivia's tricolor of red, yellow and green dates from 1851, but these days it rarely flies alone. Since the 2009 constitution, the rainbow-checkered wiphala flies beside it as a co-official symbol: one flag for the republic, another for the indigenous Andean nations.

Red stands for the blood of the heroes who fought for freedom, yellow for the country's mineral wealth, for Bolivia sits on vast deposits of silver, tin and lithium, and green for the fertility of the land. The state version carries the coat of arms at the center; the civil flag does without.

The flag was adopted on 31 October 1851. Its partnership with the wiphala makes Bolivia one of the few countries where two banners share official status, and the arrangement still fills political debate.
