Bhutan: about the flag

Bhutan calls itself Druk Yul, the Land of the Thunder Dragon, and the dragon shows up on the flag. A white dragon stretches across the diagonal divide between yellow and orange, clutching jewels in its claws.

The dragon is Druk, the guardian spirit of the country, taken from the Drukpa school of Buddhism that shapes Bhutanese life. Yellow stands for civil authority, orange for Buddhist tradition, white for purity, and the jewels the dragon guards stand for the nation's wealth and its wish to keep it.

The flag grew from a version first flown in the 1940s and was refined into its present form in the late 1960s, the dragon turned to face forward. It flies over the dzongs and schools of one of the world's last Himalayan kingdoms.
